BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The social media phenomena has gotten increasingly entertaining throughout the world in recent years. According to Bazley (2016), social media is a sort of online media that facilitates discourse rather than conventional media, which offers material but does not enable readers, viewers, or listeners to engage in its production or evolution. There are many different types of social media, from social sharing sites like Youtube and Flickr to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter (Maya, 2015). Several new brand names have emerged in the last six to seven years that were almost unknown six to seven years ago. Facebook, which was created by a 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26-year-old 26- Twitter, Chatter, LinkedIn, and Yammer are just a few examples. The internet's introduction in the 1990s ushered in significant changes in the realm of communication. The internet has cemented its presence in people's lives nowadays. It's tough to envision a young guy who didn't check social media for updates and didn't read the news lines at least once a day. The contemporary world compels us to be connected and informed about current events throughout the world (Maya, 2015).

There's no denying that the internet's arrival has aided in the development of social networking sites (SNSS). The creation of these sites transformed communication, and we now celebrate their advancement in areas ranging from education to entertainment. According to a recent research The internet's growth has led to its use as the best mode of communication, with two-thirds (2/3) of the internet's population using social networking sites (SNSs) as communication and connecting tools. Social media refers to these social networking platforms (Boyd & Ellison, 2017).

According to Kyoshaba (2019), in addition to social networking sites like Facebook, the normal guy has access to blogging sites and may start up his own blog from the comfort of his own home. Many individuals have found the ability to broadcast instantly without relying on the services of a third party to be quite freeing. Many individuals have been ecstatic about the prospect of expressing their opinions, lifestyles, dislikes, and everything else about themselves in the media.

Social networking has become a widespread international trend that has reached practically every country on the planet. The popularity of social media sites has expanded, transforming it into an online platform where individuals create, share, bookmark, and network at a rapid pace. Students are among the most active users of social media. There's no denying that social media has become an integral part of a student's life, consuming the majority of their free time. There are four key benefits of using social media in higher education, according to diverse viewpoints and beliefs. Enhancing relationships, increasing learning motivation, providing individualized course materials, and building collaboration talents are just a few of them (Wheeler, Yeomans & Wheeler,2018; Rifkin, Longnecker, Leach & Ortia, 2019). Furthermore, Liccardi et al. (2017) argued that students are socially connected with one another and thus share their daily learning experiences and engage in conversation on a variety of topics via social media, whereas Kuppuswamy & Shankar (2015) examined how social networking websites capture students' attention and then divert it to non-educational and inappropriate activities such as useless chatting.

It has been noted that students all around the world use social media, spending a significant amount of time on the internet accessing various platforms. Many individuals are concerned about how much time kids spend on social media, especially as the amount of time they spend online increases; students typically multi-task by visiting many sites and obtaining large amounts of information (Dearborn, 2014). This aligns with the findings of the Pew Internet and American Life Project, which found that 64% of youth use one or more social networking networks. Similarly, it has been reported that approximately 55% of kids have created profiles on social networking sites, with 47% uploading images and 14% posting videos, and nearly all of them posting an image or remark on a platform Osharie (2015). According to reports, the average Nigerian student spends roughly six to seven hours every day on the internet, with some students staying up all night searching. The rise of social media as a result of technological advancements and the spread of internet software has caused academics to raise their eyebrows over its (social media) influence on studies (Boyd, & Ellison, 2017). Many scholars have debated whether or not social media use has an affect or influence on kids' academic performance.

Academic accomplishment or greatness has a significant effect in an individual's placement, whether in academic institutions or in the workplace. As a result, many people are concerned about how they might improve their academic performance. The emphasis on academic brilliance, which is widely widespread across the world, has prompted a slew of studies on the conditions that foster it. Academic attainment will always play a part as one of the indicators of one's life success, both in terms of academic placement in schools and further education, as well as one's degree of employability in the workplace (Kyoshaba, 2019). Academic accomplishment refers to how students approach their studies as well as how they complete the many tasks set to them by their professors.

Academic accomplishment is defined as the amount to which students, instructors, or institutions have fulfilled their educational objectives, according to Kuppuswamy and Narayan (2015). Academic accomplishment may thus be defined as an individual's observable and measurable behaviour in a given scenario. Students' academic success is represented by their Grade Point Average (GPA) and test scores; it is one of the current educational challenges of public interest, based on low levels of student academic achievement, particularly in secondary and post-secondary institutions. Academic success of pupils in secondary and post-secondary institutions is also concerning, according to Kyoshaba (2019).

The results of the 2010 senior secondary school certificate examinations revealed that a lower-than-average number of pupils received credit in Computer Science. Over the years, this low average score has recurred. However, since 2015, performance has been steadily improving.

There have been several discussions on the effects of social media on society, particularly its impact on education and student academic achievement. According to Ogedebe, Emmanuel, and Musa (2012), the amount of time students spend on social media has an impact on their dedication to class activities, which in turn has an impact on their academic achievement. According to Osharie (2015), pupils' grades have been steadily declining as a result of their use of social media. Could this be the explanation for secondary school students' low Computer Science performance?

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The world today is a global market in which the internet is the most important sort of information. Since the advent of social media sites in the 1990s, it is assumed in some quarters that the academic performance of students is facing a lot of neglect and challenges. The educational system in Nigeria is faced with so many challenges which have certainly brought about a rapidly decline in the quality of education. There is a deviation, distraction and divided attention between social networking activities and their academic work. It is observed that students devote more attention to social media than they do to their studies (Osharie, 2015).

Obi, Bulus, Adamu, & Sala’at, (2014) points out that students’ addictiveness to social networks, students’ frequency of exposure to social network, social media network that the students are more exposed to and the influence of social media as a medium of interaction between students has been part of discussion in recent times and which have imparted on their academic performance. Instead of students reading their books, they spend their time chatting and making friends via the social media and this might definitely have influence on their academic performance, because when you do not read, there is no way you can perform well academically. It is a common sight to see a student chatting in sensitive and highly organized places like church, mosque and lecture venues. Some are so carried away that even as they are walking along the high way, they keep chatting (Maya, 2015).

In recent times social media have been a major stay in the minds of students and the world at large thereby causing a lot of drastic measure by students, teacher and even educational administrators at large. It is therefore of great importance to explore some of the trending issues facing students’ academic performance as a result of social media. Students at all levels of learning now have divided attention to studies, as a result of available opportunities to be harnessed from social media (Maya, 2015). Whether these opportunities promote studies is a question that needs to be answered. Thus, the problem this study investigates is the effect of social media on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in computer science.
